Mortimer Street and Wigmore Street Two-Way Traffic Update

The transformation of Mortimer Street and Wigmore Street into a two-way traffic system is almost complete. The project, undertaken by Westminster City Council, is designed to create a more balanced and pedestrian-friendly streetscape by optimising road space and traffic signal timings while ensuring smooth traffic flow and discouraging excessive speeds.

To finalise the switch to two-way traffic, a temporary road closure will be in place from 8am on Thursday 20th February, until 12pm on Sunday 23rd February 2025. During this period, the following roads will be closed to vehicles:

  • Mortimer Street
  • Great Titchfield Street
  • Wigmore Street
  • Cavendish Place
  • The western and northern arms of Cavendish Square

Clear signage will direct traffic diversions, and pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained throughout.

What’s Changing?
Once the roads reopen on Sunday 23rd February, the following updates will take effect:

  • Mortimer Street: Now two-way between Regent Street and Great Titchfield Street
  • Great Titchfield Street: Reversed one-way direction, now running south to north between Mortimer Street and Margaret Street
  • Wigmore Street & Cavendish Place: Now operating as two-way between Wimpole Street and Regent Street
  • Cavendish Square (West Side): Direction change to one-way north to south
  • Junction Adjustments: Revisions to vehicle placement at key junctions to accommodate the new layout

To ensure a smooth transition, traffic marshals will be stationed at key pedestrian crossings in the initial days following the change.
