When I came into the office this week it was a great surprise to see myself splashed all over the cover of the latest edition of Property Week. I had been asked for an interview by the trade publication to talk about my vision for the West End and how New West End Company is driving the development ahead of the arrival of the Elizabeth Line next year.
The interview went well but it’s a sign of the importance of the Oxford Street transformation plans that it makes the front cover. By 2020, Crossrail will be carrying an extra 60 million people into central London every year. Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and the myriad of roads between them must be ready to capitalise on the opportunity.
There is already a huge amount of investment in the buildings and new brands coming through, but we also need to think about the changing nature of retail and how the West End can respond to that to stay relevant. Our vision is to make the West End’s retail district the world’s first choice for shoppers, retailers and investment and we will continue to work closely with key partners to ensure that a transformed Oxford Street district works better for retailers, visitors and workers alike.
