Following a fantastic first day at MAPIC yesterday, we were all looking forward to seeing what day two had in store, and it certainly did not disappoint. It has been filled with meetings and speaking engagements both for MAPIC as well as on the New West End Company stand.
We started in the MAPIC Conference hall, speaking on the ‘Good Morning Retail’ MAPIC panel alongside Jeremy Collins, Property Director of John Lewis, Grant Duncan, Strategy Director of The Entertainer and Justin Taylor, Head of EMEA Retail at Cushman & Wakefield, with Mary Portas, Chief Creative Officer of Portas moderating. This morning’s theme was ‘Shopping the World’, where I was able to showcase the best that retail has to offer all of which is available in London’s West End. I also discussed the New West End Company’s App, designed to help members in the BID track sales and footfall in the district. The session covered and debated retail trends we have seen emerge across the UK, including the incorporation of omnichannel, which has been rolled out by many member brands in the West End, such as Selfridges, John Lewis, Michael Kors’ #myarrival campaign and Warehouse’s implementation of BlippAR tags when it reopened its Argyll Street store, just off Oxford Street.
The final two speaking sessions hosted on our stand at MAPIC, ‘Trend Hub- Tracking world retail performance’ and ‘Uniting beneath a Global Destination’, occurred today. Trend Hub discussed the increasing importance of collecting data to inform landlords, developers and retailers in order to understand customer behaviour and trends within the sector. ‘Uniting beneath a Global Destination’, which I chaired, welcomed New West End Company members, Jared Hart, MD Europe of Thor Equities and Katerina Mercury, Retail Asset Manager at The Crown Estate. It was an excellent way to finish our speaking programme, which deliberated the future landscape of the West End and how the different landlords in the Property Owner BID can work together in order to reach mutually beneficial goals.
I wrapped up my second day of MAPIC at the JLL Destination Soiree event, which was a perfect way to network with members, investors and agents alike. It gave us yet another forum to engage with new contacts and discuss the opportunities for investment in one of the world’s most iconic retail destinations.
