A Future for the Oxford Street District

The opening of the Elizabeth Line’s two new stations at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road in December 2018 will completely transform Oxford Street, not only with 60 million new visits to the West End, but by providing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform and revitalise the street and surrounding area.

Over the past two years at New West End Company our team have worked on a detailed study that sets out our transformative vision for the iconic street with recommendations including creating a wider variety of uses along the street, evening activity and giving greater priority to pedestrians.

This was the vital base for our response to the consultation on the future of Oxford Street district, which was launched by Westminster City Council and Transport for London in April this year. Our response included recommendations for how to deal with some of the most significant challenges that the district experiences such as transportation, employment and driving economic growth. For the full response please see here.

Following this consultation on broad principles, which closed on 18 June, Westminster City Council and Transport for London are expected to announce their preferred option in November at the start of a second, more detailed round of consultation. We eagerly await this next phase.

We are now working tirelessly to ensure that our view – and those of our 600 members across Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street – are a key part of this essential planning process. For further information on this please contact Paul Barnes at pauldavoutbarnes@gmail.com
