New West End Company, in partnership with the Westminster Property Association, hosted a business seminar to discuss the proposals for the transformation of the Oxford Street district.
The panel was chaired by Damian Wild, the Editor of Estates Gazette and comprised the following speakers:
- Val Shawcross, the Deputy Mayor of London for Transport
- Cllr Robert Davis, the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Culture & Heritage at Westminster City Council
- Craig McWilliam, Chief Executive of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland
- Jace Tyrrell, Chief Executive of New West End Company
Charles Begley, Executive Director at Westminster Property Association, welcomed the attendees and passed over to Sam Monck, the Head of Oxford Street Transformation who talked through the plans for the scheme. To see his presentation click here.
The panel then gave their views on the transformation. Cllr Robert Davis encouraged the room to seize the opportunity that Crossrail will bring to the West End. He called for assurance that these changes bring growth to the whole district, not just Oxford Street and will improve air quality.
Deputy Mayor of Transport, Val Shawcross, acknowledged that ‘the eyes of the world are on us’ at the moment and that we should use this transformation to create a world-class street experience and a great place to work and live.
Craig McWilliam made an interesting point that in order to ensure the West End continues to grow, we will need to deliver three times the amount of employee space in the next 20 years – something that needs to remain a focus of the transformation.
Finally, our own Chief Executive Jace Tyrrell highlighted that it has been the Property BID that has been the main catalyst for the West End, working in partnership with public sector bodies. It is this type of collaboration between the public and private sectors that will continue to drive economic growth in the West End.
The discussion was then opened up to the floor for questions and some interesting points were raised on management. To ensure all businesses have the opportunity to raise their key issues on the consultation, New West End Company has created this survey to gather feedback. We encourage you to complete this by 9 December and share your views.
